Inspect Element Win8 Apps

So I’ve just spent a whole bunch of time trying to debug a Windows 8 app that I’m building while following a tutorial. The tutorial seems to totally forget styles and layout exist so I’ve spent a bit of time trying to clean it up but I’m not having any luck with finding the exact styles I need to change.

Wouldn’t it be easier if Visual Studio 2012 and Win8 and an Inspect Element tool like Chrome, Firefox and Safari do?

Good thing they included one.

It took me a long time to find and I ended up using this blog post to find the feature, which MS has called DOM Explorer.

To access the DOM Explorer you need to follow these steps:

  • Start App (F5)
  • Alt-Tab to Visual Studio 2012
  • From the top menu click: Debug > Windows > DOM Explorer
  • You’ll now be able to use the Select Element feature to mouse over elements to find their styles.
